You have legal rights to tell a collection agency to not contact you. All you need to do is write the collection agency and tell them to cease all communication with you. Just use the form that is below and copy and paste it into a word document. By law the collection agency must cease contact with you except to tell you that efforts to try and collect from you have been stopped or the collection agency will start a legal action against you like suing you. A creditor may not threaten to sue you unless it really intends to do so. If they are threatening you to sue but have no intention, this could be a violation fo the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. They could be subject to a fine.
How To Do A Debt Validation
If you are trying to stall for time with a creditor, you could ask the creditor to give you a validation notice. The validation notice tells you the amount of the debt and the name of the original credit card issuer. It also says that you can dispute the validity of the debt within 30 days of receipt of the original notice. If you do not dispute it, the creditor will assume that the claim is valid.
