You have probably seen the commercials of LifeLock founder Todd Davis touting his credit card number to the public because he is so confident that nobody can get his number. The reality is that Todd Davis has been a victim of identity theft multiple times. There has been a reported 20 instances of people applying for a drivers license using his social security number. The Associated Press has reported that Davis said that his promotion has led to at least 85 instances of people trying to steal his financial information. The only successful person was able to make away with $500 from a pay day loan center.
What Does Life Lock Do?
Essentially LifeLock is renewing a consumers fraud alert with one of the credit bureaus. You only have to renew with one of the credit bureaus for it to affect all three. The three biggest credit repositories are Transunion, Experian and Equifax. You can get a fraud alert by calling the credit bureau yourself. It does not cost any money and they are good for 90 days. The only thing is that you will have to keep calling every 90 days. If you are enrolled in the LifeLock program they will do it for you automatically.
If you do not mind calling every 90 days you can save yourself some money. If you do not think you will remember to do that, I would look at sign up for a credit monitoring service like LifeLock.
